Artboredom is the
portfolio + propaganda home of Chris Huller

This site is the dictionary definition of the word sandbox. Script conflicts, FAILS, and questionable behavior all leave a pleasant aroma. On good days you can see examples of previous web + graphic design projects.

More about me if you have the time!

Gettin' My CMYK On!

When you're staring at lines of code for days on end you need visual stimulus to keep your creative brain working at peak efficiency. Here are a few posters I've created for myself for others to see. I eventually may get some of these printed to offer them for sale.

Big Broken Hyphens

Extra-tasty Helvetica shirts available from the HOTKUNST webstore.

If you don't like Helvetica, there's a hyphen! And it's in the wrong place! Bad punctuation is so hot right now.

Swiss Font Porn

Trendhumping on multiple levels but when put together makes a fine shirt. Or at least one I want to wear.

The Webodega is open late to relieve you of your monetary denominations.

Dude. What's going on with your headers?

Artboredom is a reflection of my multi-faceted visualocity so I feel REALLY constricted whittling that down to just one, single representative image.

So I didn't. Give 'em a refresh and find out.

Creative Process Stages

Why art and design can kill you and how I barely survive. What do you do to avoid the death?

I’m in this weird period of my design. I have various stages of creativity that are distinctly noticeable. At first I’m floundering, looking for something to produce. I can’t see a direction, a movement, a style, whatever. The next is I catch hold of something. If I’m designing for shirts, or thinking of a line of paintings, I’m starting to formulate a plan.

Next I’m image humping. I’m researching past artists, designers, whoever to see what can be done, and what has been done. I’m collecting more now too. The web is massive. There is shit everywhere. My latest addiction is ffffound.com. The strings you can find yourself on are endless. I’ll end up with multiple windows with up to 30 tabs open. I’ll burn through 4 gig of memory with Safari alone.

Yes this is from left field.

I’m drawn to the act of creation. I love work in progress, proposals, and sketches. I feel that this aspect of a piece is the most dynamic, where thought is unbridled and pure. I know that sounds hokey, but hear me out. As you’re in the midst of your creative process you’re channeling who you are w/ out reservation.

When you begin finishing your piece you start to make conscious decisions that are more intellectual based rather than intuition. I think the person you are during creation is more pure than the thoughtful. This applies to many styles of art, but obviously not all.

My basis for this statement or observation stems from art school. There were plenty of instances where I was watching another student work themselves to death trying to “finish” a piece, when at least to me it was already complete. This isn’t just considering over-working a piece, it’s what I see as a shift in artist. Depending on what type of art you’re producing I think there should be a level of what many would consider to be unfinished. I know at least in my own work if I tried to finish something I’d probably kill it. Who I am as a swift creator vs. the thoughtful detailist are two different artists altogether. Yet that’s also based on what kind of work I’m producing.

There’s an argument that you simply need to define that artist w/in yourself. That’s a distinct possibility, but one I’m not going to subscribe to for my own painting. I can definitively say that I’m am a freaking perfectionist when it comes to design. I guess this is the Yin to my fine art Yang.
