I was having a conversation w/ a co-worker of mine that shares an interest in web design regarding a sketch page I created last night on iWeb. The page was poking some ironic fun at “new” design (big, tight kerned fonts). It was ironic in that I like that style, and when applicable it’s something that I enjoy using; plus the page was designed in that same style. I’m so witty.
Now I’m traditionally known as a cynical person. Yet this guy makes me look like the leader of the high school glee club! Venom spewed from his mouth saying, “HOW CAN YOU LIKE THAT?!?” Continuing (roughly translated from 21 year old dialect), “You can’t read it. There’s no reason for it. I hate when it’s used just for the sake of using it…”
Now, me being roughly 30+ years old I’ve already transitioned from the blind aimless anger days, and actually mellowing out a little. I understand that we need all elements to everything we do in our lives, otherwise everything would be stagnate, boring, and predictable. Yet I can’t get over how at his age he’s against what I would’ve been for at that same age. He’s almost bordering on Alex P Keaton’s radical Republican conservatism!
Now what set me on the path of talking smack about him in the public light was when he lumped Web 2.0 into the same category. Granted the “movement” has been used and abused lately, but what got it there was everyone jumping on the multiple bandwagons of usability, standards, and accessibility. When was that a bad thing? I’m making myself sick for saying this, but he’s still young, and he’s learning; a little.
Then again, he may already be to far down a dark path. He keeps mumbling something about learning more Flash and Actionscript…

I’ve been spending the bulk of the past week trying to resolve some issues I’m having w/ connecting to a database. I’ve been working on a project for my database class at AIO, and it’s been killing me. Creating the database and table in phpMyAdmin has been no trouble at all. It’s creating the stupid MySQL connection page in Dreamweaver that’s the freakin’ problem. It’s nice to learn things by repeatedly beating your head against a wall w/out knowing that it’s not good for you. I didn’t know that Dreamweaver has issues dealing w/ underscores in database names while configuring SQL. When I create a database through Media Temple, I can’t get around it.
It’s been great having a teacher that was willing to do some work for us and find out what the problems were, and help us all individually. She actually went so far as to code a connection page for me so I could see the process of accessing my database. I truly hope that this isn’t the process that we have to go through w/ everything of this nature, ‘cuz it sucks! When I got a chance to throw down some CSS to style the table it was a joy and a pleasure.
Granted I’m coming into web design from a very visual background, so naturally I’m drawn to the visual aspects of code, but I’ll still have to create databases for future clients. Hopefully I’ll have figured this out by then!
Future employers, disregard that last sentence.

Once again my entries table is full of unpublished posts. I think I have at least 5 that I haven’t finished. Knowing myself this entry is probably going to be shelved until later as well, and this is the abridged, content edited, formatted to fit your screen version of a post from a couple of weeks ago!
I finally made myself migrate to the (gs) Grid-Servers at Media Temple. I don’t know what I was waiting for since it was so damn easy. Just a few clicks and I made the trip to my new flat (British for hype new crib). After that there was only a few housekeeping details w/ my mail setup, but that’s about it. The new control panel is sweet; and there’s a ton of information at your fingertips. Everything feels more intuitive.

Things are so easy now, that I went ahead and installed WordPress (previously unavailable) to give that CMS a try. I’m going to use that for another blog I’ve been doing for the past year, but have slacked off recently. I’ll let you all know when that goes live. I figured that w/ all the hype it’s getting I can’t go wrong by trying it out. It already seems to have a much more active community surrounding it than w/ Movable Type. We’ll see.
On the, “Yes sir! May I have another…” front my PC is on the verge of a complete meltdown. This time it’s a product of bad hardware and not just the freaking OS. I installed some nice fresh RAM, and that lasted all of a couple of weeks before I was having spontaneous reboots. I went up to 3 GB only to be cut down to 1.5 (don’t ask…). Now it looks like that nothing in this setup is going to play fair w/ each other so here comes rebuild #3 (or is it 4?). Cool thing is that I’m going to be able to go to SLi w/ this setup that I’m thinking of. Not that I have any time for playing games!
Lucky I’m typing this on my iMac!
Too bad all my storage (1 TB+) is in the PC.
