The first step to recovery is admitting you have one and that you’re powerless to control it. Why would you want to control this? It’s like eating too much candy, sometimes too much makes you a little queasy in the stomach and it affects your attention span. Afterwards you say you’re going to cut down on how much you’ll consume, only to be swayed by another tasty treat.

I’ve run into some more hot app action. I signed up for my free account w/ MyStickies.com. Post-Its are hot, and to be able to use them electronically for something that works is a bonus. Quick rundown: sign up, download Firefox extension (add-on for 2.0), restart browser, and start posting. You can access your Sticky several different ways, but my favorite is the Alt+click action; I’m not a fan of another browser toolbar. They should make a button that is accessible from the navigation toolbar since I do use that for del.icio.us, Furl, Firebug, and the Web Developer toolbar (which I activate when it’s needed).
Why do you need to add a sticky to a website? If you’re like me and you see things you like on sites, but after bookmarking them in your browser you can’t remember why. I have an entire folder devoted to content that I need to revisit, but half the times I move on because I don’t know why I saved it. Being a web designer, I come across a flood of tutorials or code snippets on pages that all look the same. When you go back through the content it’s almost impossible to recognize what it is you needed. The results are kept on their website, where you can get all social and share them, but the next feature is what I’ve been looking for. When you revisit the site, the sticky shows up again! My first attempts were unsuccessful, but I’m guessing that’s because I didn’t activate my account w/in my browser, but once I did the miracle of the sticky began. The only caveat I’ve seen so far is once the sticky is saved and you revisit the site to add another sticky that post is saved as another instance. It doesn’t look like the app has the ability to combine them for the same instance, although the URL is the same. I’m not sure why this is, but it would be a nice feature, especially if I’m making multiple notes on my site as I’m building it. I guess the solution is to just add more to the original note if you want to update it. No biggie, but something for them to consider for the future.
I do a lot of bookmarking, but I think the ability to leave a reason to why you saved a page in the first place is truly invaluable. Tagging your bookmarks is needed for others to see what you’ve been doing and to have another accessible, sorted, cache of webformation. The stickies will be for me.

I’ll admit there was a time that I was hatin’ on this design. While I’m still not completely sure about it, I feel that’s due to it being so different than I’m used to. The way I should be seeing this is that I’m new to designing web sites, so my own visual style hasn’t been developed. Designing a website w/ accrued knowledge and skill vs. knowing what you like because you surf the net are two completely different things. I know there are things that I like about sites, but as I’m designing, I’m concentrating in these early stages on what I can produce code-wise. The stronger and more efficient I get w/ CSS the more complex and visually complete my sites will become. On to what I’ve produced so far.
Images. Finally realized that there needed to be something other than grey/orange text. I’ve been pretty happy w/ my shots lately so here they are. They’re shown as background images so I could have text display accurately over them. At this moment, I haven’t figured out ZED (z-index) ordering and the fact that transparencies won’t display on the majority browser in use isn’t making that a priority.
About page. This was killing me for quite awhile, but I think I’ve trimmed and edited the copy down to something that works very well. I especially like the link solution at the bottom. I’m also geeking off the screen photo for the main image. So tasty.
Extended remix. Still slightly verbose, and that’s an understatement, for once! I like the heart the web section at the bottom; lot’s of new-web goodness. You really can get a feeling of who I am. Very touching.
BG shadow. Something was causing an abnormal eye sensation as I’d scan the pages. I’m pretty sure it was the lack of differentiation between the BG and the foreground. Although they’re both white, adding a more substantial shadow allows the main page area to be on a different plane. I think it’s easier on the eye now.
I’m sure there’s something else I could bore you with, but I can’t think of it at the moment.

Work on my portfolio site has been fueled by a combo of anxiety, embarrassment, and addiction. I wonder what Dr. Tiki would prescribe for that? Anyway, going down the list: the anxiety is from my desire to make up for lost time, the embarrassment is both from my previous design and the state this one is in, and last, I’m beautifully addicted to the creation of this thing.
I say brute force attacks because that’s what it’s taken to get through some of the blocks I’ve been having. This design was born from code rather than design. It’s not how things should be done, but it was so far along that I wasn’t going to stop and design from the beginning. So obviously there are going to be some issues on how things are working visually that I have to hack my way through. This all actually makes sense considering I’m learning more complex XHTML and CSS as I’m going. A case could be made for learning to code by recreating what you made in Photoshop or Illustrator, but at the moment of decision, I wanted to be typing Hypertext.
I think once I’m finished w/ the content of the site, I’m going to work the left side bar in Photoshop and see if there is another solution. I know that some of my design decisions have been hampered by what I know in CSS. It’s not a huge impact, it’s just that I’d probably be less hesitant to do something in Photoshop considering I wouldn’t have to write a rule just to see something. The creative process would be cleaner in PS.
The old site isn’t dead though. Some elements are going to breath broadband again once I cover them in some Flash. I’m going to use it to give me some visual direction in my final project site design. I figure that I’m tightening my sphincter enough w/ pushing towards strict XHTML and valid CSS on this present site that I should play while creating one in Flash. We’ll see how that comes along in a couple of weeks.
Speaking of class, I have to get back. I’ve been wandering the halls too much lately.
